Powell Gardens' Native Prairie Series: Conservation

Ona Gieschen’s Native Prairie is owned and managed by Powell Gardens, located just outside of Sedalia, Missouri. At the completion of this series of workshops, participants will have gained a valuable perspective of this ecosystem. Powell Gardens’ Native Prairie Series, at Ona’s Prairie, will highlight various topics regarding the tallgrass prairie such as biodiversity, management, and conservation. Each workshop will also include a discussion of a particular prairie plant species for additional community context*. Participants can sign up for all the classes in the series or select based on the topics presented. Classes will be held outside on the prairie, so please wear close-toed shoes, long pants, hats, and bug spray. There will be a picnic area and water available for a break time. Portable toilets will also be onsite.

May 10th (Weather Date May 12th) 1-PM: In the first workshop, participants will receive an introduction to tallgrass prairies, including ecological perspectives and distinction amidst other grassland types. Additionally, identification of the major plant families found in this ecosystem and techniques for plant identification will be presented. The plant of focus for this class is Painted Cup (Castilleja coccinea.)

June 28th (Weather Date June 30th) 9AM-12PM: The second workshop will focus on prairie management and the connection to natural history. Participants will learn about prairie assessment and invasive species management. The plant of focus for this class is Sensitive Briar (Mimosa quadrivalvis var. Nutallii.)

August 9th (Weather Date August 11th) 9AM-12PM: The final workshop of the series will focus on conservation. Participants will learn about the process of prairie restoration and seed collection. The plant of focus for this class is the Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya.)
