Step Into the World of Square Dancing!
Square dancing has been the Missouri state dance since 1995. It is defined specifically as the Missouri "state American Folk Dance." Square dancing is described as "dancing with a smile," with a focus on fun, socializing, and physical exercise. No experience necessary to square dance. It is not your elementary, middle, or high school curriculum square dancing, no, it is more modernized square dancing! It is a high-energy, non-competitive activity featuring choreographed, pattern-based movement set to diverse music genres like pop, rock, country western, and techno. Led by a caller, four couples (a square) execute calls in real-time, functioning as a "mental walk" rather than a memorized routine. It is a global, social, and inclusive activity for all ages. There are multiple levels available to learn depending on your desire to advance. Dancers join clubs and learn standardized movements, moving through levels such as Basic, Mainstream, Plus, Advanced, and Challenge. Furthermore, modern attire often skips traditional crinolines and bolo ties in favor of casual clothing, although some clubs retain traditional western wear at some festivals and national events. Clubs in Missouri usually dance between the months of August to May, with many dances still to be found around the state in the months of June and July! C’mon give it a try!
