Terrarium Workshop

Join lead Horticulturalist, Brent Tucker, for a workshop where each attendee will make their own terrarium and learn how to maintain them in your home. After the workshop, attendees can tour the terrarium display in our Terrace Hall.

Intro to Foraging: Part 1

Beginner foragers- this is the class for you! Participants will learn local and regional knowledge to located, identify, and utilize wild plants and mushrooms around us throughout the season. Find out what to look for, when and how you can about finding these valuable resources and how to ethically harvest them. Lydia Brawner, Lead Horticulturalist, will cover different types of mushrooms you can find here and their mutual relationship with trees and fruiting mediums. You will learn identifiable features and preferred growing locations that will help you to forage with confidence. This class is indoor.

Intro to Foraging: Part 2

The 2nd part of this class will cover how to incorporate foraged items into your diet. Lydia Brawner, Lead Horticulturalist, will take the class out into the wood to show attendees how to look for foraged items. Please come prepared to be out in the changing elements with longs sleeves, pants, and hats to deter contact with ticks and poison ivy. Participants will learn about how to harvest mushrooms in the wild, specific post-harvest handling and storing of mushrooms before preparing and eating them, while also learning how to preserve. Home cultivation of shitake, wine cap and oyster mushrooms outdoors in your home garden will also be covered. Medicinal purposed and uses of mushrooms will also be covered as the research on this is increasingly positive for health outcomes. This class will also have a mushroom cooking demonstration.

Celebrate the season of love with Powell Gardens’ Valentine Soirée. Cherish your loved one in the heart of the Midwestern landscape! 
Upon arrival, view a transformed Grand Hall complete with cut-flower botanical displays, crackling fireplaces, live music, and a glass of bubbly. Enjoy wine and chocolate pairings throughout the Visitor Center along with hors d’oeuvres and live music from Emily Dix, local jazz vocalist. Craft a special valentine or write a heart-felt love letter in our Victorian parlor, whisper sweet-nothings as you hold each other close on the dance floor, sneak into the Perennial Lounge for a cocktail or craft beer, after enjoying wines from around the world, paired with delicate chocolates from local chocolatiers.
