Garden to Glass: Tropical Edition

Take a behind the scenes tour of the Powell Gardens greenhouses while sipping on a tropical favorite, the Mai Tai. Guests will learn the history of their cocktail, then Lead Horticulturalist Eric Perrette will lead a tour of the tropical greenhouses on Powell Gardens’ Greenhouse complex.

Virtual Lunchtime Lecture: Harry S Truman, the Presidential Farmer. Feb. 24, 2022, 11:30-12:30

 

Join Doug Richardson, Program Manager, Interpretation and Visitor Services at the Harry S Truman National Historic Site to learn about how Harry Truman’s upbringing working on his family’s Grandview Farm shaped his political career. He spent eleven years on that farm, knowing the land and people, which laid the groundwork for his future in politics. This program will be held via Zoom, so you must register by February 23rd. The Zoom link will be emailed to you 24 hours before the program. Be sure to check your spam folder if you do not receive the Zoom link.

 

Attendees will also receive a GA pass to use at Powell Gardens in 2022. 

Garden to Glass: Gin Edition

Juniper berries! Coriander seeds! Citrus! All these natural ingredients distill into a delicious botanical gin! In this edition of Garden to Glass, learn all about the history of gin and the special ingredients that make up botanical gins! Attendees will enjoy a taste of botanical gin, then make a classic gin cocktail, the Bee’s Knees. Attendees will also take home a Powell Gardens branded glass.

Book Club: The Orchid Thief

Attendees will enjoy a complimentary beverage and snacks while discussing Susan Orlean’s book, The Orchid Thief. After the discussion, guests are welcome to view the Orchid Delirium exhibit as well as the rest of the Gardens.  

Members: Native Grass Talk

Why are certain butterflies dependent on grasslands for their survival? How do grazers and browsers affect insect diversity? What happens to plant life when a prescribed burn occurs? Learn more about the tallgrass prairie ecosystem as Senior Gardener Julie Copley explores this biologically diverse community, a signature of the Midwest landscape.

Family Program: Spring Flower Art

Drop in and explore the spring flowers blooming at Powell Gardens! Kids will make their choice of flower art through a variety of methods: hammering, suncatchers, and more!  

Adults only need to register the kid(s) participating in the activity.

Orchid Symposium

Join Powell Gardens to celebrate our first annual Orchid Delirium Exhibition with an Orchid Symposium. You will enjoy presentations about a variety of topics: the history of Orchidelirium with Education Manager, Caitlin Eckard, Top 10 Orchids for the Home with Master Gardener Carol Gravens via Zoom, and Paphiopedilum: An Introduction and Culture with Lead Horticulturalist Brent Tucker. A boxed lunch and non-alcoholic beverage are included with your ticket. Attendees will also take home their very own moth orchid (Phalaenopsis.)

Horticulture Happy Hour: Succulents

Are all cacti succulents? Are all succulents' cacti? Find out at our first ever Horticulture Happy Hour! Join lead horticulturalist Eric Perrette for a deep dive into everybody’s favorite house plant, succulents. There will be popular and unusual succulents on display, and participants can take home their very own succulent cutting! Participants (21+) will enjoy an alcoholic drink while increasing their knowledge about this fascinating flora. Your ticket also includes admission to the Gardens, which will be open late on this date.

Gardening 101: Bonsai Basics

Family Program: Herb Planting

Attendees will receive their own terra cotta pot to paint. While the paint dries, staff will show examples of herbs that can grow in pots, and then attendees will plant their herb seed to take home and grow! Recommended for ages 6 and below. Your ticket includes admission to Powell Gardens’ Painted Garden Festival, a value of $12. 

Adults only need to register the child painting the terra cotta pot.

Lunchtime Lecture: Tulip Mania

What was Tulip Mania? Tulip mania was a period during the Dutch Golden Age when prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels. Join Education Manager, Caitlin Eckard for a deep dive into the social history of Tulip Mania, as well as the lasting effects on the Dutch economy after the bust of tulip sales. After lunch, we will tour one of the spring flower collections- weather pending. A boxed lunch and non-alcoholic drink are included with your ticket. Painting with Plants! The Garden as a Gallery! The Elements and Principles of Design are consistently evident not only in the visual arts but also in garden design. Join "Docent Donna" Houtteman, for a new series exploring gardens in the visual arts and connections to Powell. This two-part educational series will start with a 90- minute Zoom presentation focused on orchids in various forms of artwork, nationally, regionally, and locally. The second part of this series is an after-hours tour of the Orchid Delirium Exhibition two weeks after their Zoom session, complete with snacks and a drink.
